Hey friends, this is Amy Gilane here on the blog today with a Sew-jo fix; a satisfying quick upcycle!
I have four children, and I really love that I can pass down clothing. We live on the thrifty end, or mom made- but then they get the holes, or tears.. and you maybe don't want to throw it away. While I could applique, or add a patch, I have found it insanely fast to simply upcycle the basic tees down to raglans for the next kid or two... a couple sizes smaller.
When holes are near bottoms of hems, in armpits, or sleeves, its quite simple to cut down into a smaller size. I took a classic tee here of my oldest son, and decided to size down for my little dude, using a simple raglan. In this case it is the Sandlot Tee from Lowland Kids.
In true speedy sew fashion, I have cut up the side seams and then I pulled up the pattern, and eyeballed the center. I cut the front and the back, and I decided to use a second scrap for sleeves. In this case, I found a scrap from another sewing friend, and had enough for long sleeves. I also reused the neckband from the existing tee. I cut it open where the seam was, as I knew neckband would be smaller.
This scrap is a cut of French Terry, and I think it is a fun choice, tying the navy and white font into the print.
To add some fun to my quick upcycle, I hemmed the bottom including a tag from Shine Bright Label Company
For contrast, I hemmed the French Terry scrap inside out, as it fit the body of the tee.
This is now a doubly upcycled tee! I love that it has memories from my oldest, and from a sewing friend.
You can simply be done at this point, but if you've seen any of my makes, I thrive on being extra...so here is my back addition, another little tag from Shine Bright.
Now for some details: This was a size 8 youth tee, which I sized down to 18-24mo easily. I did before cutting also size to a 4T, but decided my little dude needed it more.
The most satisfying aspect of upcycling this tee today was not only saving a treasured tee, but seeing big brother well up with tears as I showed him how I saved his tee, and how excited he was to give it to little brother today.
Happy Sustainable Sewing, friends!
I enjoy seeing all your makes over at The Sewing Hub!
